Patience is a virtue in short supply. Our Gospel reading (Matthew 18:21-35) finds Saint Peter, always the great stand in for all Christians, asking very pertinent questions for everyone. “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus says, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.” In other words, we are to always forgive those who sin against us. That’s the patience of God. It is total. It is found in the blood and righteousness of Jesus who pays the price for all the sin of all the world in His own death. And His righteousness is given in His own death and resurrection to everyone who believes in Him alone for life and salvation. The results of that imputed righteousness is to forgive “from your heart.” And that’s why you come and hear His Word. Because, in yourself, you know you have no such ability to forgive every time. Jesus in His Word and in His body and blood provides that which is necessary for you to repent into His forgiveness and to follow Him in forgiving. Come dear friend. Hear Jesus in the Parable of the unrighteous Servant. Repent and believe the Good News. In Christ alone you do “forgive from your heart.”
